Apologies for Server DowntimeApologies for Server Downtime

As some you will have noticed, both the main site and the forums where AWOL for a few hour yesterday (Sun. 11/07/04). This was due to a router failure at our hosts, which was in turn caused by vandalisation of the air conditioning units ourside of the building (its gettin hot in here).

No damage was sustained by our actual servers, and no data was lost.

The router failed at approximately 5.00am on Sunday and normal server was resumed at around noon.

We would like to apologise to all our members/viewers for any inconvenience caused.

Half-Life 2 specs revealedHalf-Life 2 specs revealed

Valve boss Gabe Newell has revealed the hardware requirements for Half-Life 2, ahead of the game's expected late summer release. Taking time out to post on HL2Fallout's forums last week, Newell said that the minimum spec would be a 1.2GHz powered PC with 256MB RAM, Win 98/ME/2000/XP and a DirectX 7 compatible graphics card. But for those who want to see the game running in all its glory, be prepared to spec up to around a 2.4 GHz machine, with 512MB RAM, Windows 2000/XP and a DirectX 9 capable graphics card.

This will come as a relief to many PC gamers used to games requiring specs well out of reach, although in this case the graphics card will be the key component to consider when getting your machine back in shape. Our machine hasn't seen a great deal of gaming action so far this year, but we're happy to report it's fighting fit and ready for a slew of hi spec FPSs to finally make use of its expensive innards.

Xbox 2 to be announced at X04Xbox 2 to be announced at X04

The Xbox 2 looks likely to be formally announced in September, with Sony's PlayStation 3 announcement this morning helping to heap pressure on Microsoft to finally take the wraps off the successor to its Xbox console. To date, Microsoft has consistently refused to comment on any talk of Xbox 2, despite issuing numerous game developers with development kits, but with both Nintendo and Sony having made up their minds to use E3 2005 as an initial launch platform, Microsoft will be mindful that it needs an event of its own which can generate as much attention without getting lost in the next gen crowd.

The most logical assumption to make, is that Microsoft will use X04, its annual industry event for Europe, as the means to reveal its intentions in the next generation console market, although at the time of going to press, Microsoft has not yet confirmed that the event will be taking place this year. A mid September date is expected, however. Microsoft's Peter Moore repeatedly stated back in May that Microsoft would "not be beaten to market", and therefore the firm needs to begin beating the drum to the industry shortly - and X04 would appear to be the ideal platform for the firm to begin the process of launching Xbox 2 to the wider world.

Sony Says New PlayStation to Be on Display at E3Sony Says New PlayStation to Be on Display at E3

Sony Corp. expects to show off its latest PlayStation at the E3 trade show next May, it said on Monday, increasing pressure on Microsoft Corp. to take the wraps off its Xbox successor at that time. Sony's game-business head Ken Kutaragi said it planned to unveil a playable version of the new console at next year's E3, the annual video-game trade show scheduled to take place from May 18 to 20 in Los Angeles.

"There has been some talk that development is not going well, but we expect to have a playable version at E3. We are pushing ahead with that schedule in mind," Kutaragi told a meeting of developers, suppliers and media. Kutaragi did not mention a launch date for the new console, dubbed "PS3" by some Web Sites, but company officials said it may follow a similar timetable to market as its predecessor, the PlayStation 2 (PS2), which went on sale in Japan almost a year after it was first displayed.

New PS3 DetailsNew PS3 Details

At the recent Rambus Developer Forum 2004 Japan that was held in Tokyo, some new details about the PS3 have come to light. According to PC Watch, the XDR DRAM chip that is being loaded onto the PS3 has been changed from a 512Mbit chip to a 256Mbit chip. One thing that hasn't changed is that production will get underway next summer, making a launch in the first half of 2006 likely.

As to why this has been changed, some industry insiders have been saying that the change has been for cutting costs, but it may not be so cut and dry. The modification can mean one of two things: the total memory has been dropped or memory bandwidth has doubled from 25.6GB/sec to 51.2GB/sec. Both possibilities are likely and the first one would be for cost-cutting. If it's the latter, however, then more work may be done by the Cell chip.

ATI Dynamic Branching DemoATI Dynamic Branching Demo

Just got word that Humus has finished up his New dynamic brancing demo!

Nvidia can consider themselves pwned. Here's a demo that does dynamic branching, without the need for pixel shader 3.0, and still receives the huge performance boost that pixel shader 3.0 dynamic branching supposedly gives when utilized in a similar fashion.

Requires:

  • Pixel shader 2.0

  • Vertex shader 1.1

  • Please Note: Dynamic Brancing runs on by default on Radeon X800 cards. On Radeon 9500 and up, and on GeForce 5200 and up, The result is that early-out speeds things up considerably. In this demo the speed-up is generally in the range of two to four times as fast than without early-out. And with more complex lighting, the gain would have been even larger.

Windows XP Game AdvisorWindows XP Game Advisor

Microsoft has outfitted the Game Advisor with a Game Finder, Demos, Screenshots, Trailers, and Update sections. For the parents out there you can filter the games by age and game type. Below all that you have two displays a sidebar that displays gamming recommendations and a bigger display used for displaying everything else. The four key features to Microsoft?s Windows XP Game Advisor are Demos, Screenshots, Trailers, and Updates.

Demos are organized by top five, alphabet, and of course a search engine in case you already know what you?re looking for. The Screenshots section offers high quality images. Once clicked a new window will appear taking you directly to the game manufacturers site. For example if you click on Battlefield Vietnam you will be taken to the Electronic Arts homepage for Battlefield Vietnam (screenshot section). The Trailers & Updates feature performs the same basic way by taking you to the game developer?s site.

While hardcore gamers may not find this real useful, the rest of us can. With the system scan feature you can find out if your Windows machine can run a game, without leaving your computer. In addition to that you can get the latest updates, demos and screenshots all in one location. No doubt Microsoft is thinking about gamers for future and present versions of Windows.

    Half-Life 2 console boundHalf-Life 2 console bound

Xbox version confirmed plus Valve reveal they're in touch with "all the console platform holders"

Doug Lombardi, of Half-Life 2 developers Valve, has given the strongest hint yet that the game may eventually appear on a range of consoles. In an interview yesterday he confirmed that an Xbox version is "is in the works but I can't give you an exact date right now."

More pertinently, though, he added, "We're in touch with all the console platform holders and would like to bring the game to as many platforms as makes sense." If the massively-delayed release of the PC version is anything to go by, though, don't hold your breath for the console incarnations.
