Firefox Userbase Increases Once AgainFirefox Userbase Increases Once Again

The percentage of users browsing with the Firefox web browser has increased to 11.5%, the highest percentage that the browser has reached. Web Analysis firm One Stat produced the information taken from users of its stat service. It seems as though the percentage is even higher in America, where it reached 14.1%, while a lowly 4.1% of the British public use Firefox.

The percentage of people using Firefox has increased 3 points since April 2005, taking yet another chunk of Internet Explorers huge market share of 85.5%, but it is not only Internet Explorer that has suffered from Firefox?s increased popularity. Other popular browsers such as Opera have seen their usage percentages fall, with users either going to Firefox or Internet Explorer.

One Stat reported that figures for Apple?s OSX web browser Safari, had also made an increase over the past 6 months, most likely down to the rejuvenated success that the mac line has had this year.

Are website administrators responsible for posted threatsAre website administrators responsible for posted threats

What, if anything, should website admins do when users post threatening messages on-line? Internet law experts generally agree there is no legal onus on site owners or users to notify police. Investigating each and every threatening post from what is essentially mostly anonymous visitors would be impossibly time-consuming and expensive.

On-line chat rooms have quickly mushroomed into virtual communities where people can reinvent themselves behind screen names. But on-line forums can also free some users to post exaggerations or lies, making it difficult for webmasters to distinguish fact from fiction. And many of those message boards are patrolled by volunteers who may not be able to recognize a problem because they are young and/or not trained as mental health professionals.

During the past few years, a handful of chat room users who published violent messages have been prosecuted, but such threats rarely are carried out, legal experts say. Websites where the threats are posted are rarely sued because they're not legally bound to alert police, said Nicolas Terry, an Internet law expert at Saint Louis University's Center for Health Law Studies.

Adware firm helps FBI nab botnet hackersAdware firm helps FBI nab botnet hackers

Adware maker 180solutions claims to be a key witness in the case against three Dutchmen accused of running a botnet which controlled 1.5m PCs. The group allegedly used the largest zombie army ever created to retaliate with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against 180solutions after the vendor terminated its distribution contract. 180solutions develops an application called the Zango Search Assistant which offers access to games and premium content.

The application also comes bundled with software that presents pop-up ads as users surf the web. Many spyware detection and removal tools label the application as spyware, including Computer Associates' eTrust PestPatrol AntiSpyware. Software distributors are paid a fee for every copy of the software they get installed, creating an incentive for botnet operators to install the software on hacked systems.

NVIDIA Introduces 6800GSNVIDIA Introduces 6800GS

Enthusiasts have considered the 6800 GT a very good "high-end value" for quite some time. However, with 7800 GT prices falling into the sub-$330 range, the 6800 GT's reign has drawn to an end. To fill the performance gap and compete with the ATI's X800 GTO and still unavailable X1600 XT, NVIDIA has introduced the 6800GS, which is essentially a higher-clocked 6800 with GDDR3 RAM. It is clocked so much higher in fact that its performance rivals that of the 6800 GT, even with fewer pixel pipelines and vertex shaders.

While the performance is spot-on and the card is already available from companies such as eVGA, it is not clear how many OEMs will support the card or how long it will be available before seeing replacement from a GeForce 7 series part.

XForms support for Firefox takes a major blowXForms support for Firefox takes a major blow

In an effort to reduce costs, Novel has cut it's Copenhagen R&D department and with it put one of the major XForms extention developers out of a job. Allan Beaufour, in his blog, explained how he hopes to be able to finish work the XForms extension and get it to 1.0 status, but understandably is lacking motivation.

"Talk about bad timing. Firefox 1.5 is about to hit the shops, opening up for XForms ? and I believe XForms in general is starting to pick up speed. I?m really sad to leave the colleagues, the office, and the XForms project in general." Beaufour said.

XForms is the future of online forms as envisioned by the W3C. Drawing on other W3C standards like XML Schema, XPath, and XML Events, XForms tries to address some of the limitations with the current HTML forms model. Features that most web forms have could include the ability to do client-side validation, event handling and declaring interdependence of one form element upon another.

In HTML, much of this functionality had to be written in large JavaScript libraries that had to be updated and maintained as forms changed. XForms incorporates much of this functionality internally which can be utilized by a form author using simple XML markup.

"I hope to find the motivation, and possibly a 'sponsor' to at least get XForms 1.0 done for Firefox. I?ll probably hang around irc until the end of November, and try to do some Mozilla work." Beaufour said.

Long Standing Bug Still Plagues Thunderbird UsersLong Standing Bug Still Plagues Thunderbird Users

Are you a Mozilla Thunderbird user who lives in an area that observes Daylight Savings Time? Is your computer running a Windows operating system with FAT or FAT32 formatted drives? If so, chances are you may have experienced problems with Thunderbird since the change from Daylight Savings Time went in to effect earlier this month. A long standing bug that causes severe performance issues and has existed in various stages of the Mozilla project now known as Thunderbird continues to plague users despite having a history of bug reports that have been filed via Bugzilla, Mozilla?s online bug reporting tool.

Users experiencing this bug state that when they initially open Thunderbird, their Inbox shows nothing, staying blank as the application says that it is checking for new e-mail messages. Users closing the application and re-opening it find that it displays the status as "Rebuilding", eventually reloading, but taking 2 minutes or more to do so. They also report that whenever Thunderbird is open their computer becomes very sluggish and unresponsive.

Several users have reported that compacting their folders and removing all old messages from their Inbox may provide a solution to these symptoms, while still others have reported having to delete corrupted .msf files from their Thunderbird profile, then re-open Thunderbird and perform the compact routine. While these options may provide relief for frustrated users, they hardly qualify as a solution to the problem.

ATI Denies X1000 DelaysATI Denies X1000 Delays

ATI has denied rumors that portions of its recently introduced X1000 product line are experiencing delays, according to X-bit labs. Currently, a majority of stores only have the X1800 XL in stock, which has been available for the past few weeks. X1600 series and X1800 XT cards were slated to appear between October 30th and November 2nd, but currently only one US based store, Allstarshop, has the X1800 XT available. ATI's budget X1000 line, the X1300, was scheduled for availability alongside the X1800 XL. However, searches on popular online comparison shopping sites revealed no X1300's for sale.

A spokesperson from ATI denied the rumors, stating that product release dates have not changed. ATI has received a lot of criticism over its X1000 launch after NVIDIA announced immediate availability of 7800 series cards upon launching the line this past June.

PS3 could run at 120 fps, claims KutaragiPS3 could run at 120 fps, claims Kutaragi

Playstation 3 will be capable of running games at 120 frames per second claims president of Sony Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi. According to Japanese news service Nikkei BP, Kutaragi's comments were made as part of a speech about the PS3 and the Cell processor delivered at the Tokyo International Digital Conference last week.

Kutaragi said that there are not televisions which are capable of refreshing a screen at that rate, but he wanted PS3 to be ready when new TV technology is released. His comments are likely to be met with some scepticism, not least because the majority of movies and television broadcasts are shot at only 24 or 30 frames per second, while many modern games run happily at 30 frames per second, with some more action-oriented ones hitting 60 frames per second.

Kutaragi also pointed out that the Cell chip can decode more than ten HDTV channels at a time, and can be used for rotating and zooming effects. He discussed some of the different ways in which it could be used - to display actual-size newspaper pages, for example, to show more than one HD channel on the screen at a time, or for video conferences.

Stanford engineers could hold the key to faster chipsStanford engineers could hold the key to faster chips

In what may prove to be a technological breakthrough of immense proportions, Stanford University announced on Thursday that members of it's electrical engineering department have come up with a solution to what has until now been a major road block in chip development progress. Their development is a new component that can easily be built in to chips to break laser beams in to billions of bits of data per second. We all know that light can carry data at much higher rates than electricity, but until now it has been too cost prohibitive and difficult to attempt to integrate light based circuitry in to silicon chips in electronics.

W.M. Keck Foundation Professor of Electrical Engineering, David A.B. Miller and fellow researcher James Harris estimate that the device, a modulator, could be as small as a millionth of a meter tall and about as long. They estimate that it could operate at rates greater than 100 billion times a second, or 50 times faster than the rate of data transmissions in the computer hardware of today.

?300k eBay Fraudsters Sentenced?300k eBay Fraudsters Sentenced

A cell of three Romanian fraudsters have been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud by deception and money laundering. The trio were sentenced in Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court, UK, after using popular auction website eBay.co.uk to scam people out of a combined total of over ?300,000. Nicolae Cretanu, 30, and his wife Adriana would use eBay's Second Chance system to contact unsuccessful bidders and offer them the same or similar goods. The bidder would then be lured into paying for these non-existent goods by money transfer, which obviously Mr Cretanu never had any intention of delivering.

The goods offered ranged from cars to concert tickets. A large portion of the fraud's money would be sent back to accomplices in Romania, which police say was part of sophisticated operation. Nicolae Cretanu received a 3? year jail sentence, while his 23 year old wife and their money laundering accomplice George Titar both received 2? years.

International Space Station Nears MilestoneInternational Space Station Nears Milestone

Wednesday, November 2nd will be an historic date for NASA and the International Space Station as it marks the Stations fifth year anniversary of continuous human presence in space. Since the delivery of the module Expedition 1 on November 2nd, 2000, the I.S.S. has grown to become a state-of-the-art laboratory complex. Originally the size of a small apartment, the Station has grown to a volume larger than that of most three bedroom homes.

The experiments that are being performed aboard the International Space Station could provide the answers to many scientific and medical problems that could potentially hinder further space travel and exploration. For instance, it has long been known that there is a significant increase in the rate of bone loss by crewmembers while in orbit. By maintaining such an extended presence in space, medical scientists have been able to understand better where and how the loss is occurring and can now begin to work on combating it. Other experiments being conducted aboard the Station are testing technology and mechanical components that could be used in future missions to Mars or beyond. Remarking on the importance of the I.S.S. experiments, Expedition 9 flight engineer Mike Finckle said "The International Space Station is a perfect stepping-stone for us to perfect the technology, to perfect the operational tempo, operational parameters that we need to in order to make those long-duration missions successful."

Samsung to Launch iTunes CompetitorSamsung to Launch iTunes Competitor

Samsung is to follow Apple and Sony and launch its own online content download service to promote its digital music players. The revelation was made on Friday by Choi Ji-Sung, the head of the company?s digital media division. Choi said the service will be launched domestically and overseas shortly, though no firmer timetable was given.

Choi indicated that the motivation behind the service's launch will be to allow the company to compete more effectively with Apple's iPod. Samsung's players, he said, are better than Apple's, though Apple has sold many, many more digital music devices than Samsung has. He appears to believe that will change when a Samsung-branded content service launches. "Considering that Samsung's market share is bigger than Apple's in Asian countries and that the iTunes service is not offered in the region, except in Japan, we definitely have a competitive edge there," Choi said.

Google to Hire Programmers to Improve Open OfficeGoogle to Hire Programmers to Improve Open Office

After an agreement with Sun Microsystems earlier this month to promote one another's software, Google has announced plans to hire programmers to improve Open Office. The open-source office suite, which has its roots in Sun's proprietary StarOffice package, has seen much greater exposure since the deal with Google. Now Chris DiBona, Google's manager of open-source programs, believes that with a bit of help they can improve upon Open Office's shortcomings, such as high memory requirements and 80MB download size.

Open Office 2.0 was released on October 20th. Nearly 50 million copies of the software have been downloaded since the project's inception nearly five years ago.

Bill Gates Donates $258.3 Million for Malaria ResearchBill Gates Donates $258.3 Million for Malaria Research

Malaria research accounts for about one-third of 1 percent of the total amount of money spent on medical research and development, even though it accounts for 3 percent of all the productive years of life lost to diseases, according to a report released Sunday. The report, the first comprehensive analysis of malaria research funding, coincided with an announcement by the field's biggest private donor, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, of $258.3 million in new grants to accelerate the development of new drugs, a vaccine and better mosquito control methods.

"It's really a tragedy that the world has done so little to stop this disease that kills 2,000 African children every day," said Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates. "If those children were in rich countries, we would have headlines, we'd take action. We wouldn't rest until every child was protected." Malaria causes an estimated 500 million bouts of illness a year, kills an African child every 30 seconds and costs an estimated $12 billion a year in lost gross domestic product.
